Start Building Employee Morale While They’re Still New Hires

It’s never too soon to start building employee morale. Use your formal orientation sessions and your informal welcome practices to make new hires feel like part of the team.

Review your orientation process: If your company doesn’t already have a written orientation procedure and employee manual, start developing them now. Making people feel welcome and clarifying expectations is key to avoiding high turnover. Orientation sessions should include company and job-specific information and a review of benefits. Allow time for questions. If possible, break the sessions up over multiple days. People will learn better, and their first days will feel more pleasant if they’re not just filling out forms.

Help the new hire learn from others: Supervisors should usually spend extra time with new hires and take them around to be introduced to everyone in person. Interacting on a more frequent basis in the first months helps to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts. It may also be helpful for the new person to shadow other employees and watch how things are done. This will help build positive work relationships that are one of the most important factors in job satisfaction.

Put out a welcome package: Chocolate is good for morale. Leave a token gift on their desk like a chocolate bar or coffee mug.

Remember personal information from their interview: It’s always flattering to feel like people listen to what you say and take a personal interest in you. If they mentioned that their children were entering a new school, ask them how things are going.

Set up their workspace: Let them know you were looking forward to their first day by having their workspace all set up. Greet them with a tidy desk and a working computer and phone.
